IMTS - The International Manufacturing Technology Show is the biggest manufacturing technology event in the world attracting all the top companies. The event, which takes place every two years, features more than 1,900 exhibitors, and attracts over 100,000 visitors from 112 countries. From September 8-13, IMTS debuts in Chicago for its 30th edition. Peter Eelman, Vice President - Exhibitions & Communications at The Association For Manufacturing Technology (AMT), and show organizer, shared his best practices on how to effectively work with exhibitors.

    "Remember who the customer is"

The most efficient way to keep exhibitors interested is by taking care of the attendees. "Remember who the customer is. The customer, in our opinion, is the visitor; it isn't the exhibitor," Eelman pointed out. "The exhibitor is part of our customer base. They are our partners. We work together, but the real customer is the attendee. So, what we try to do as show management is do everything possible to make this a memorable event for the attendee and that's really how we keep the exhibitors happy. If you have a lot of attendees and you have a lot of interested buyers, you'll have a lot of interested exhibitors."

Promote your exhibitors all the time, not just during the show

IMTS is committed to consistently promoting their exhibitors. They have a comprehensive website that includes, among other useful tools, an exhibitors directory where people can find the participating companies and do business with them.

"As of this point in time in the manufacturing arena, there really isn’t a more visited and more useful website than IMTS.com. For our exhibitors, it's not just a show support site, it's the site that people use as when they think for instance, ‘Ok, I need to buy something, or I need to look for something, what's the best search tool?’ Our website is the best search tool, so that's really how we support them—by making our website an ongoing, functional site even when the show is over," said Mr. Eelman.

Six months before the show IMTS invites its exhibitors at no charge to the exhibitor day-long workshop where they can network, learn from experts, and get the latest tips, tricks and information to prepare for the show.

"We don't look at it as individual shows, IMTS is a continuous process of assisting our exhibitors and bringing their products to the market," shared Eelman.

Use technology to simplify your operations

To simplify some of its processes IMTS is using what they call an 'e-Kit’, an online application on their website that replaces the old exhibitor manual. Now exhibitors can have all the show information and forms they need online.

“You can use the e-Kit for virtually any need at the show, whether it be operations, marketing, or research. All of that is available via the e-Kit so that an exhibitor really has just one stop to learn, to use the resources, get discounts by signing up for things by a certain date, etc. So we try to make it an all-encompassing electronic tool."

The mission of AMT is to represent and promote U.S.-based manufacturing technology and its members—those who design, build, sell, and service the continuously evolving technology that lies at the heart of manufacturing. AMT has been organizing the Show since 1920.

This year the highlight of the IMTS will be featuring the build of an electric car utilizing 3D printing technology in AMT’s Emerging Technology Center.
